Ubuntu is a GNU/Linux distribution that's a little closer to Windows; that is to say, things usually "just work", except when they break, and then they tend to stay broken. But it does rely mostly on free software, and is derived from the slightly more technical Debian distribution.
gNewSense is derived from Ubuntu.
