I find this glurge a little amusing because people seem to enjoy mucking with it to support what they enjoy taking time out to do. It seems to twist and change to support the time period. It's also older than my grandma. Some of the old versions are attributed to "Old Irish Prayer", which I guess could be true.
Version e-mailed to me, perhaps from the 19th century:
- Take Time
- Take time to work. It is the price of success.
- Take time to play. It is the secret of perpetual youth.
- Take time to read. It is the foundation of wisdom.
- Take time to think. It is the source of power.
- Take time to laugh. It is the music of the soul.
- Take time to be friendly. It is the road to happiness.
- Take time to share. It is the path to true wealth.
- Take time to love and be loved. It is the privilege of the gods.
Another early version, 1920s or 1930s (American School Board Journal):
- TAKE TIME!
- TAKE TIME TO LIVE—
- That is what time is for. Killing time is suicide.
- TAKE TIME TO WORK —
- It is the price of success.
- TAKE TIME TO PLAY —
- It is the fountain of wisdom.
- TAKE TIME TO BE FRIENDLY —
- It is the road to happiness.
- TAKE TIME TO DREAM--
- It is hitching your wagon to a star.
- TAKE TIME TO LOOK AROUND--
- It is too short a day to be selfish.
- TAKE TIME TO LAUGH--
- It is the music of the soul.
- TAKE TIME TO PLAY WITH CHILDREN--
- It is the joy of joys.
- TAKE TIME TO BE COURTEOUS--
- It is the mark of a gentleman.
- TAKE TIME TO THINK —
- And you will always use NATURAL SLATE for Your CHALKBOARD Requirements.
Haha, I got you. This early version came in the form of an ad for chalkboards. Alas, the "mark of a gentleman" would not last long after women's lib.
A dreamless version, from fall 1966 (Educational Horizons 45.1):
- Take Time To Think
- It is the source of power.
- Take Time To Play
- It is the secret of perpetual youth.
- Take Time To Read
- It is the fountain of wisdom.
- Take Time To Pray
- It is the greatest power on earth.
- Take Time to Love and Be Loved
- It is a God-given privilege.
- Take Time To Be Friendly
- It is the road to happiness.
- Take Time To Laugh
- It is the music of the soul.
- Take Time To Give
- It is too short a day to be selfish.
- Take Time To Work
- It is the price of success.
- Find Time
- And the rest is easy!

Although the state of psychology in the 60s made dreaming seem less useful, this one has interesting suggestions, such as making prayer one of our most important things to spend time on (a lovely Christian idea).
Here is a down-to-earth 1998 version (Gregory L. Jantz):
- Take time to think; it is the source of your power.
- Take time to play; it is the secret of your youth.
- Take time to read; it is the foundation of your knowledge.
- Take time to dream; it will take you to the stars.
- Take time to laugh; it really is your best medicine.
- Take time to pray; it is your touch with almighty God.
- Take time to reach out to others; it will give your life significance.
Here's one from the 21st century that took a turn down Jesus Road:
- 1. Take time to Work - It is the price of success.
- 2. Take time to Think - It is the source of power.
- 3. Take time to Play - It is the secret of youth.
- 4. Take time to Read your Bible- It is the foundation of knowledge and feeds the soul.
- 5. Take time to Worship - It is the highway of reverence and washes the dust of earth from our eyes.
- 6. Take time to Help and Enjoy Friends - It is the source of happiness.
- 7. Take time to Love - It is the one sacrament of life.
- 8. Take time to Dream - It hitches the soul to the stars.
- 9. Take time to Laugh - It is the singing that helps with life's loads.
- 10. Take time to Pray: It rids us of our excess baggage.
- 11. Take time to Plan - It is the secret of being able to have time to take time for the first ten things.
Here's another recent one that took a turn down the opposite path, towards generic humanism:
- 1. Take time to dream – it hitches your soul to the stars.
- 2. Take time to work – it is the price of success.
- 3. Take time to think – it is the source of power.
- 4. Take time to play – it is the secret of youth.
- 5. Take time to read – it is the foundation of knowledge.
- 6. Take time to worship – it is the highway of reverence and washes the dust of earth from our eyes.
- 7. Take time for friends – they are the source of happiness.
- 8. Take time to love – it is the source of joy.
- 9. Take time to laugh – it helps with life’s loads.
- 10. Take time for beauty – it is everywhere to be enjoyed.
- 11. Take time for health – it is the true treasure of life.
- 12. Take time to plan – it is the secret to getting the things you desire.
As you can see, rewriting glurge to support your philosophy is both easy and fun!
