The idea of a Buddhist lineage was invented in China to demonstrate the unaltered nature of their Buddha-dharma. It is semi-legendary.

This legendary lineage originates with the Mulasarvastivada sect. It was adopted in both Tibet and China. [1] But by another account, Nagarjuna alleged dharma transmission directly from Manjusri. By another account Nagarjuna received teaching from Saraha.
