Honmichi is a religion founded by ex-Tenrikyo member Oonishi Ajirou in 1913. Oonishi was a missionary who became convinced he was the living kanrodai. 1913 was exactly 115 years after Oyasama's birth and many believed in 天啓待望論 (tenkei taibou-ron), the doctrine that a new Shrine of God would be appointed at the end of Miki's 115-year era. He originally founded the "Tenri Research Association" (Tenri Kenkyuukai) but taught more than research: he said he was the living kanrodai and that he had the honmichi or true path. However he also taught that the Emperor was a false king appointed by mythical teachings, and as a result the Kenkyuukai was disbanded and he was arrested with his followers.

In 1930, after the Japanese government finished pondering the question of whether denouncing Oonishi's claim to be a living kami would cast doubts on the Emperor's own claim, he was declared mentally unfit for trial and released.
