A chatta was an umbrella, which could be made of white cloth, bamboo chips, or leaves in a round shape, and used with or without spokes. According to the Cullavagga, only sick monks were allowed to use umbrellas on the road; if a healthy monk used one, it was an offense of dukkata for a bhikku and pacittiya for a bhikkuni. Near the arama, on the other hand, anyone could use an umbrella.
According to the Samantapasadika, on the other hand, umbrellas could be used at any time to protect from rain, wild animals, or robbers.
